Food for the Soul

I find that there is too much discouraging news in the world today. It is becoming increasingly rare to come across a story with a happy ending. I found this article about a Manchester, England, borough blast. A home collapsed and a man risked his life to climb inside and save a woman and her toddler. His name is Vincent Jones and people are calling him a hero for his actions. The cause of the collapse was a gas explosion nearby. Fourteen people were injured and five of them included children. Jones stated that he ran out of his home after the blast and heard screams coming from his neighbor's home. He grabbed a ladder and climbed into the house as it subsided in front of him. He said that adrenalin got him through and that he does not think of himself as a hero. He says that he did what anyone else would have done.

I love stories like this because they reveal the good in human nature. Jones did not think about his own well-being before the woman and her child. Consequently, they are both alive today. This is a more dramatic reminder to try and think of others before we think about ourselves. By doing so, we may make a significant impact.

  1. Your blog reminds me of Crabb's book Connecting. He discusses how we tend to focus on our bad urges and fleshly nature rather than our good nature, or what he calls our unreleased goodness. Its important to understand that we are fallen creatures, but if we don't let Christ's blood give us a new identity, we live by this fallen attitude and ignore our Spirit-nature. Christ lives in us, so lets cultivate the good in one another!

  2. Wow this is a fantastic story and that man should be commended for his actions. So many people now are becoming self-centered and assuming that life revolves around them. This man was able to break out of that mindset at a time of desperation to save several lives that in no way are connected directly to his own. This was a very noble act and I pray that it encourages others to stand out and act as well.
