Why Vote?

Election Day 2010 will be on us before we know it. Now, I am not a very political person. I believe that I am a citizen of Heaven and therefore don't really get involved in politics , but I believe that we, as Christians, need to be a voice for the ones who can not speak.

In class we discussed, "what is a person?" The issue of embryonic stem cell research wrestles with this question. Does an embryo constitute a person? If so, is it wrong to destroying a life when we harvest the embroy's stem cells, to potentially heal another? This is a very heated debate and one that I believe has a absolute answer. Human life begins at conception and no matter how small this life may be, it does not give one liberty to destroy it in order to save another.

A recent article about a independent candidate for a Florida senator deals with with this topic. Gov. Charlie Crist, who is now running for senate, has reaffirms his support for this type of research. Although, he was once considered Republican and opposed to embryonic stem cell research, he now supports its.

This reminded me that we need to stay up-to-date with candidates and find out where they stand on these essential issues. People, esspically politicians, change their views and it is our responsiblity to find out the truth about where they stand. We need to be able to define our views and make sure that the person we are voting for aligns with these really important issues, such as the defination of a person.

  1. I never was really political either, simply from a lack of interest. Now because of everything that has transpired since our last presidential election, I am an advocate (more so than I used to be, not completely there yet !) of knowing whats going on in the world and which politicians stand for what issues. Personally though, I think it is very important to vote. I understand the concept that we are citizens of heaven, but we are also living on this earth and abide by our government. For this reason, its important to know who we are putting in office by voting or by not voting.
